Is an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by the government?
The International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document issued by the United Nations (UN) based on international agreements signed by multiple countries.
It serves as a translated version of a national driving license in 10 languages and allows the holder to drive outside their country of residence. However, it is not valid for driving within the holder’s country of residence.
Saudi Arabia, as a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (1968), permits Saudi citizens and residents with an International Driving Permit issued by MACIDP to drive in foreign countries. The MiddleEast Automobile & Tourism Club Association (MACIDP) has been a member of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) since 1982.
What are the requirements for obtaining an IDP?
- A copy of your passport.
- A copy of your valid Saudi Driving Permit.
- A personal photo of the applicant

Is the digital international driving permit universally accepted?
The acceptance of Digital international driving permit varies across countries. It is recommended to inquire with the traffic authorities of your destination country to confirm whether they recognize Digital IDP copies.
How long is an IDP valid for?
The international license is valid for a duration of one to three years. It is crucial to check the expiry dates on your documents before your travel. For example, if you apply for a one-year permit in May, you can legally drive internationally until May of the following year.
How much does it cost to obtain an IDP?
To obtain an international driving license in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the price is 150 Saudi riyals, with additional charges for local or international shipping.
How can I check if my IDP is valid?
To verify the validity of your IDP, follow these organized steps:
- Check the expiration date.
- Confirm with Issuing Authority: Contact the organization or authority that issued your IDP to verify its validity.
- Review driving and IDP requirements in the destination country.
Is the validity of a 3-year IDP accepted in all countries?
Not all countries accept a 3-year IDP validity. Some countries may only allow 1-year IDP validity. It is advisable to inquire with the traffic authorities of your destination country for specific requirements.
Is my International Driving Permit accepted for car rentals?
Yes, major car rental agencies accept our international driving license. Please present your original driver’s license along with the IDP. In some cases, additional documentation and insurance may be required.
